The Gom Benn Scholarship Fund awarded $7,500 in scholarships to 24 outstanding students at a luncheon at Rosemead Community Center on August 24, 2019.
The Ron Chin Scholarship, awarded to the top graduate student, was presented for a second-straight year to Thomas Chang, above left, a computer science major at UCLA studying to become a software engineer/entrepreneur. He is the grandson of Wing Gun Wong. His other interests include baseball, photography and investing. The Ron Chin Scholarship was endowed with $10,000 donated in memory of the son of Gene and Alma Chin.
The Stephen Huahn Scholarship, awarded to the top college student, was presented for a second-straight year to Jillian Pih, above, second from left, a communication and psychology major at the University of Southern California. Jillian is the granddaughter of Chew and Yowly Hoi. She enjoys hiking, running, baking and traveling. The Stephen Huahn Award was endowed by Harold and Mary Wong with $10,000 to honor their son.
The Gim Hong Lee Scholarship, awarded to a top college student, was presented to Brendan Yang, above, third from left, also for a second-straight year. He is attending Northeastern University in Boston, majoring in computer science and biology. He is the grandson of Karl Lee. He enjoys painting/drawing, Magic the Gathering, yoga, baking, video games, golf and swimming. The Gim Hong Lee award was endowed with $10,000 donated by his wife, Sun Woo Lee.
The Roy Lim and Gim Oi Wong Scholarship, awarded to the top high school student, was presented to Nathaniel Wong, a senior at Diamond Bar High School. A future computer scientist, he is the grandson of Roger Wong. He enjoys coding, rock climbing, tennis, video games and movies. The Roy Lim and Gim Oi Wong award was created with $10,000 to honor their memory.
