The Gom Benn Scholarship Fund has honored 31 students for their academic excellence in the 2020-21 school year. This includes the presentation of five memorial scholarships established by Gom Benn families. These five students are listed below. In all, the scholarships awarded this year totaled $9,530 — our highest total ever. Thanks to all who have contributed to our scholarship endowment, which in mid-2021 totalled more than $125,000. Our congratulation, too, to all our outstanding students.
Chew and Howly Hoi Memorial Scholarship Award
Kristi Chu was presented the Chew and Howly Hoi Memorial Award as the top part-time graduate student. She received a Master’s Degree in Business Administration in data analytics at the University of Delaware. She is working as a business analyst. She is the granddaughter of Sui Ching Lau, and the daughter of Elina Chu, the Scholarship Fund’s treasurer. Kristi enjoys travel eating, and eating to travel.
Ron Chin Memorial Scholarship Award
Lauren Wong was presented the Ron Chin Memorial Award as the top graduate student. She completed her Master’s Degree in Business Administration at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management. Her goal is to be a high education coach. She is the daughter of Jim Wong. Her interests include traveling, cooking, hiking, working out, reading, singing, writing, tennis, golf, basketball, ping pong, piano and guitar.
Gim Hong and Sun Woo Lee Memorial Scholarship Award
Jillian Pih was presented the Gim Hong and Sun Woo Lee Memorial Award as the top college senior. She graduated the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Art’s Degree in communications. Her goal is to be a businesswoman. She is the granddaughter of Chew and Howly Hoi. Chew Hoi was a longtime member of the Scholarship Fund executive board. Her interests include running, hiking, golf, baking and music.
Stephen Huahn Memorial Scholarship Award
Stacey Lau was presented the Stephen Huahn Memorial Award as the top college student. She is a sophomore at Cal State University Los Angeles studying food science and technology. Her goal is to be a food chemist. She is the granddaughter of Sui Ching Lau. Her interests include watching movies, sewing stuffed animals, and throwing the frisbee.
Roy Lim and Gim Oi Wong Memorial Scholarship Award
Joshua Tam was presented the Roy Lim and Gim Oi Wong Memorial Award as the top high school senior. After graduating from Calabasas High School, he’ll next attend Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland to study aerospace engineering. His goal is to be an engineer. He is the grandson of Margie Tam. His interests include playing clarinet and piano.
