The Gom Benn Scholarship Fund was established in 1982 by Bing S. Wong, with a contribution of $12,000, plus a yearly donation of $1,000 from the Bing Wong Scholarship Foundation in San Bernardino. Many other generous Gom Benn (甘边村) members have added donations.
Each year, the Stephen Huahn Memorial Scholarship is presented to the top college student. Harold and Mary Wong donated $10,000 to establish the Stephen Huahn scholarship to honor the memory of their son.
In 2003, Gim Oi Wong and her husband Roy Lim donated $20,000 for another memorial scholarship. Half of the interests and dividends from the investment of the donation will be used for scholarships for descendants of Gom Benn Village, and half will go to descendants of Mr. Lim’s village.
Winnie Lee, their niece, described her aunt as a “champion of education” who grew up in Gom Benn without an opportunity for schooling beyond middle school. “Because of Gim Oi Wong’s strong beliefs in obtaining a good education, she wanted to create a way to encourage young people to take advantage of opportunities that she missed,” said Winnie.
In 2012, the Ron Chin Memorial Scholarship was established to help a top college student. It was created with a $10,000 donation in the memory of the son of former Scholarship Fund President Gene Chin and his wife Alma.

With a gift of $10,000 or more, you too can fund an endowment that will provide scholarships to Gom Benn students in perpetuity. The funds you donate are invested responsibly and a percentage of the earnings is withdrawn annually to provide a scholarship to a student. You will also be our honored guest at the annual awards luncheon each summer, where you can meet the recipient of your scholarship and present the award.
