The model minority concept of Asian Americans being racially superior to other non-white ethnic groups is not a compliment, nor a framework to empower Chinese Americans.

In their first decades here, Chinese immigrants were labeled a "yellow peril." Today they're hated by some, and to others, they've become a "model minority." What happened?

Exclusionists barred Chinese laborers but the pro-China lobby won an immigration gateway for intellectuals, businessmen and students -- the studious, hard-working, successful who became the models for the "model minority."
