Scholarship Awards for TK to Grad School

The Gom Benn Scholarship Fund has honored 33 students from transitional kindergarten to graduate school, presenting nearly  $13,200 in scholarships for their academic excellence in 2024-25, including six memorial awards. 

In all, scholarships were awarded to four grad, eight college, one high school, four middle school (6th to 8th grade), and 15 elementary students including five youngsters who attended transitional kindergarten – the first time awards were presented to TK students.


Memorial Awards

Stacey Lau
Marilyn Lau

The Ron Chin Memorial Award for the top graduate school student was presented to Stacey Lau, a food services major at Chapman University. The Chew & Yowly Hoi Award for the top part-time student was presented to Marilyn Lau, a human resources major at the University of Southern California. 


Rebecca Tam

The Stephen Huahn Award for the college student with the highest GPA went to Rebecca Tam, a multimedia major at California Lutheran University.

Two other memorial awards were presented to two top college students: the Gim Hong & Sun Woo Lee scholarship for the senior with the highest yearly GPA went to Kaityn Lai, a food and nutrition major at Cal State University Sacramento; and the Johnny Wong scholarship for the senior with the highest cumulative GPA throughout college to Joshua Tam, an aerospace and mechanical engineering major at Case Western Reserve University. 


Marcus Hau

The Roy & Gim Oi Lim scholarship for the top high school senior was presented to Marcus Hau, a student at Chaparral High. 


Community Service

Madeline Cheng

With another donation from Johnny Wong’s family, two first-time Community Service awards were presented. One award was presented to high-school senior Marcus Hau, and the other to eighth-grader Madeline Cheng. Both volunteered for more than 400 hours of community service.


Our Board, Endowment, Donations

The Scholarship Fund is administered by a board that includes Andrea Young, Winnie Lee, Elina Chu, Traci Huahn, Courtney Lewis, and Art Wong, plus advisors May Wong, Kaitlyn Wong, Lindsay Wong and Valerie Lee. 

The nonprofit Scholarship Fund is supported by an endowment of nearly $150,000. Donations are tax deductible. To contribute, make out a check to Kan Pien Scholarship Fund (our legal name), and mail to Treasurer Elina Chu at 1746 Morgan Lane, Redondo Beach, CA 90278.

We are grateful for all our donations this year, including contributions from the family of Johnny Wong, Gom Benn Village Society, Bing S. Wong Foundation, and others.
