Gom Benn Village’s Kan Pien Scholarship Fund awarded $6,000 in scholarships to 34 stellar students at a luncheon on August 18, 2018.
The Ron Chin Scholarship, awarded to the top graduate student, was presented to Thomas Chang, a computer science major at UCLA studying to become a software developer. He is the grandson of Wing Gun Wong. His other interests include hiking, philosophy, reading and baseball. The Ron Chin Scholarship was endowed with $10,000 donated in memory of the son of Gene and Alma Chin.
The Stephen Huahn Scholarship, awarded to the top college student, was presented to Jillian Pih, a psychology and communications major at the University of Southern California. Jillian is the granddaughter of Chew and Yowly Hoi. She likes hiking, running, baking, snowboarding, and spending time with family and friends The Stephen Huahn Award was endowed by Harold and Mary Wong with $10,000 to honor the memory of their son.
The Gim Hong Lee Scholarship, also awarded to a top college student, was presented to Brandan Yang, who is attending Northeastern University in Boston, and majoring in computer science and biology. He is the grandson of Karl Lee. He likes tabletop gaming, painting, baking, yoga and golf. The Gim Hong Lee award was endowed with $10,000 donated by his wife, Sun Woo Lee.
The Roy Lim and Gim Oi Wong Scholarship, awarded to the top high school student, was presented to Bryant Yang, a senior at the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies. A future engineer, he is the grandson of Karl Lee. He likes binge watching TV shows, golf, volunteering, discovering new Spotify artists, swimming, tutoring, and waiting in amusement park lines. The Roy Lim and Gim Oi Wong award was created with $10,000 to honor their memory.
