The Gom Benn Scholarship Fund has honored 28 students with $13,500 in scholarships for their academic excellence in 2025-26, including the presentation of six memorial awards, a community service award, and our first award for a professional certification.
With more than 70 family and friends in attendance, the awards were presented at an August 15 luncheon at Rosemead Community Center. In all, scholarships were awarded to one grad, six college, two prep school, two middle school , and 16 elementary students including two youngsters who attended Transitional Kindergarten.

The Ron Chin Memorial Award for the top graduate school student was presented to Stacey Lau, a food science major at Chapman University. Stacey is the granddaughter of Wong (Lau) Sui Ching. Stacey’s interests include volleyball, piano and cooking.
The Gim Hong & Sun Woo Lee Award for the top college student was presented to Rebecca Tam, a senior at California Lutheran University majoring in multimedia. Rebecca is the granddaughter or Margie Tam. Rebecca’s interests include crafting, cooking, and going to concerts.
More Memorial Awards
Three other memorial awards were presented to top college students. The Johnny Wong Award was presented to Micah Gee, a senior majoring in nursing at Loma Linda University. He is the grandson of Kim Wong Gee. His interests include pickleball, food, golf, and shows/movies.
The Chew & Yowly Hoi Award went to Marcus Hau, a freshman majoring in business analytics at the University of California, Riverside. He is the great-grandson of Sui Ching (Wong) Lau. His interests include tennis.
And the Stephen Huahn Award was presented to David Sun, a senior majoring in business administration at Cal State University Los Angeles. He is the grandson of Fu Yu Huang. His interests include the Dodgers, attending concerts, and basketball.
The Roy & Gim Oi Lim scholarship for the top high school student was presented to Madeline Cheng, a ninth-grader at Flintridge Prep. Madeline was also presented a Johnny Wong Award for her community service. She is the great-granddaughter of Bing K. Wong. Her interests include dancing and cheerleading.

The inaugural Johnny Wong Award presented to a student pursuing a professional certification went to Tina Wong for completing a course in the Foundations of Project Management. She is the daughter of Kung Bill Wong. Her grandfather is T. Din Wong. And her great-grandfather is Chun Dik Wong.
Award Administration
The Scholarship Fund is administered by a board that includes Andrea Young, Winnie Lee, Elina Chu, Traci Huahn, and Art Wong, plus advisors May Wong, Kaitlyn Wong, Courtney Davis, Courtney Lewis, Lindsay Wong and Valerie Lee.

The nonprofit Scholarship Fund is supported by an endowment of more than $150,000. Donations are tax deductible. To contribute, make out a check to Kan Pien Scholarship Fund (our legal name), and mail to Treasurer Elina Chu at 1746 Morgan Lane, Redondo Beach, CA 90278.
