2016 Scholarship Winners

The Gom Benn Scholarship Fund awarded almost $6,000 in scholarships to 38 outstanding students at a luncheon July 23, 2016, at the Marie Callender’s restaurant in Monterey Park.

The Ron Chin Scholarship, awarded to the top graduate student, was presented to Jessica Kao, who is attending the MIT Sloan School of Management. Jessica, the granddaughter of Chew and Yowly Hoi, plans to work in healthcare. Her other interests include exotic sustainable travel, trying new recipes and running. The Ron Chin Scholarship was endowed with $10,000 donated in memory of the son of Gene and Alma Chin.

The Stephen Huahn Scholarship, awarded to the top college student, was presented to Brendan Yang who is attending Northeastern University where he is majoring in biology and computer sciences. The grandson of Karl Lee, Brendan is planning a future in medicine or computational biology. His other interests include hiking, Muay Thai kickboxing, concerts, dancing and painting. The Stephen Huahn award was established with $10,000 donated by Harold and Mary Wong in memory of their son.

The Gim Hong Lee Scholarship, also awarded to a top college student, was presented to Allison Chang, who is attending Kaplan University and majoring in educational psychology. Her interests also include reading, traveling, and working with kids with special needs. The Gim Hong Lee award was endowed with $10,000 donated by his wife, Sun Woo Lee.

And, the Roy Lim and Gim Oil Wong Scholarship, awarded to the top high school student, was presented to Bryant Yang, who is attending the L.A. Center for Enriched Students and focused on the sciences. Bryant is the brother of Brendan and another grandson of Karl Lee. His other interests include golf, online gaming and binge-watching Game of Thrones. The Roy Lim and Gim Oi Wong award was established with $10,000 donated to honor their memory.
